Serving as a Family at Church

We have enjoyed serving as a family within our local church. There are always plenty of needs within each church, and we would encourage you to seek God's direction for how your family could get involved in serving together. We would like to share some of the ways that the Lord has led our family to serve.

We are involved in ministry at our church and we really enjoy that opportunity. We attend a small church with a wonderful pastor who preaches the Word. There are many ways that families can support their local church.

One of the most important ways to support the local church is through prayer for the church and the pastor. If your family has an interest in praying, ask the pastor if you can pray for him, and ask for specific prayer requests. I am sure that he would be very honored to know that you care enough to regularly spend time in prayer.

"Deaconettes"

When our dad served as a deacon, our entire family got involved in serving with him. We would all go to the church to assist him with his responsibilities. We helped set up for the Sunday morning and Thursday evening services, cleaned the church, took care of the lawn, assisted with food bank, helped prepare for church dinners and other events.

Our parents made serving together a good experience for us. Mom made my sister and I each an apron to wear when we worked at church, and suddenly, we became "deaconettes." The Lord used this time to give us a desire to serve Him with our whole heart.

Church Sign

At another time, our family was responsible for changing the message on the church sign. We would discuss ideas of Scripture verses with the family, and then a few of us would go out each week to post the new message on the sign. This was a real ministry to the community as well as to the church. Many of the neighbors said that they always read the sign as they passed by the church.

Encourage the Pastor

As a way to minister to our pastor, we decided to take turns writing a short, one-line note of encouragement to him and put it in the offering basket every Sunday. As a family, we planned this out so that each of us wrote about one note per month. The notes said, "We are praying for you," or "We were blessed by last week's message on seeking the Lord," or any positive qualities that we saw in the pastor, his family, or the church. This continual encouragement meant so much to the pastor and he said so!

Sunday School

When our parents taught Sunday school classes or children's choir, they would have us assist them in preparing, and sometimes in presenting the lesson. One year, our family coordinated Vacation Bible School for our church and we were all involved in teaching it together.

Musical Ministry

If your family is musical, there are many opportunities for a music ministry, including: doing special music at church, sharing through music at nursing homes, singing as a family, playing instrumental solos, or ensembles, etc.

Each family and church is unique and we are each called to minister in different ways. These are only a few ideas, and there are so many more possibilities! We would encourage you to pray as a family and seek the Lord for His direction.
